| Nissan EV. | Nissan Li Ion battery with comparisons | Ford Ranger is powered by lead-acid batteries | Parking the EV+. Oil stains are not from EVs! |
| We attended the L.A. Auto Show in our EV Plus. Free parking and charge-up at the 8th and Figueroa parking garage.
Interest in Electric Vehicles was high, even though general knowledge about them was lacking. The question many asked, again and again, "...how far does it go?". An embarrassing question for the Ford Ranger, whose lead-acid batteries give it a range of less than 50 miles. It will be used (like the electric Chevy pickup) by airports and parks for security and utility functions. They do not need more than that range, and charging is easy. The GM EV1 club members were present, with neat logo-ized T-shirts. Their enthusiasm is great! Every major had an electric car to show. Most use the NiMH battery developed by Energy Conversion Devices' Ovonic Battery Company, and made by Panasonic. Sony has a demonstration Lithium battery pack, but the de facto standard seems to be the NiMH, which works great in our car. Car buffs in the basement seemed oblivious to the new winds a-blowin', but clearly the center of attention was the new electrics. There were two "hybrid" gas/electric cars on display from Honda and Toyota with fuel economy of 60 to 80 mpg, which with the new gas VW Beetle were the hit of the show. Even the funny cars, like the one-person three-wheel "sparrow" and Toyota's tiny runabout were crowded. We bought a license plate holder, "See us on the web/hondaev.com" for ten bucks. Missed out on the fuzzy dice and custom steering wheels. |
